Ways to maintain sustainable coffee cultivation

At Pret, we've recognized the importance of sustainability for decades. While there's much debate about what it means to be sustainable and environmentally friendly in a broader context, for us, growing coffee is pretty simple. We believe that ethical coffee farmers should grow coffee in a way that enhances the environment in which they produce it.

Our commitment to sustainability

We try to implement as many environmentally friendly practices as possible. Here are some examples:

  • Encourage shade-grown coffee: Not only is it delicious, but it's also less harmful to the environment. Using the natural shade of trees reduces the amount of pesticides and fertilizers we need and preserves the trees.
  • Reusing coffee processing waste: Instead of disposing of coffee processing waste, we use it as fertilizer to feed agricultural land.
  • Water Reuse: We reuse water from the treatment process to irrigate future coffee crops.
  • Employing Certified Organic Farmers: We work with certified farmers for our organic produce.

Commitment to fair wages

In addition to our environmental practices, we are also committed to paying our workers fair wages. For us, sustainability isn't a suggestion, it's a responsibility. We take our responsibility to the earth and our employees seriously, and this is reflected in the quality of our coffee.

Using coffee processing waste as fertilizer

Instead of disposing of coffee processing waste, we use it as compost to fertilize farmland. This move is not only environmentally friendly, but also improves soil quality and contributes to the sustainability of local agriculture. Through this practice, we affirm our commitment to preserving the environment and supporting Costa Rican farming communities.

Reusing water from coffee processing

We reuse the water generated from the coffee processing process to irrigate future crops. This practice promotes resource efficiency and helps conserve water, contributing to the sustainability of coffee farming. Through this effort, we affirm our commitment to environmental conservation and supporting sustainable agricultural production in Costa Rica.

Using certified organic farmers for our organic blends.

We use organically certified farmers to produce our organic blend. This ensures that the coffee we serve is not only delicious but also grown in a way that preserves the environment and promotes sustainable agriculture. By supporting farmers who follow organic farming practices, we contribute to the protection of local ecosystems and the well-being of the farming community.

Our commitment to sustainability and fair wages

In addition to our environmental practices, we are also committed to paying our workers fair wages. For us, sustainability isn't just a suggestion; it's a responsibility we take seriously, both to the planet and to our employees. This is evident in the quality of our coffee. By supporting our workers and ensuring fair working conditions, we contribute to building a sustainable society and a better environment for everyone.
